Zero import duty on lentils by India is expiring on September 2022 and the same has been extended from thereon till March 2023 by GOI. This greatly benefits exporters both from Australia and Canada, which have the largest share of lentil export to India. Also, farmers from both the countries will be harvesting their lentil crop during the same time i.e. September/October. As for the production estimates, ABARES forecast for their 2022-2023 lentil crop is 788 KMT whereas AAFC lentils production estimates are 2.5 MMT.
