Canadian Wheat & Canola Stocks Drop Pulses Surge in July 2025

Statistics Canada has released its most recent update on the inventories of major field crops in Canada as of July 31, 2025. The report highlights notable shifts across key crops, with wheat and canola reserves declining sharply, while stocks of dry peas, lentils, and chickpeas showed significant year-over-year increases compared with the same date in 2024.

Wheat - As of July 31, 2025, total wheat stocks were recorded at 4.1 million metric tonnes (MMT). This represents a sharp 22.1% decline compared with July 31, 2024. Breaking it down further, commercial wheat inventories fell 10.1% to 2.4 MMT, whereas on-farm stocks experienced an even steeper drop, falling 34.3% to 1.7 MMT.

Canola - The most dramatic shift was observed in canola stocks, which fell by more than half. Total inventories stood at 1.6 MMT, a 50.5% decline year-over-year. Breaking this down, commercial stocks decreased by 37.9% to 1.2 MMT, while on-farm stocks plunged by 70.1%, dropping to 378 thousand metric tonnes (KMT).

Dry Peas - In contrast, dry pea inventories showed strong growth. Total stocks rose 63.5% from the previous year, reaching 489 KMT. Of this total, commercial stocks increased 20.4% to 236 KMT, while on-farm stocks surged an impressive 145.6%, climbing to 253 KMT.

Lentils - The largest year-over-year increase was seen in lentil stocks, which expanded to 549 KMT, a remarkable 232.7% rise from 2024 levels. Commercial stocks grew by 11.6% to 154 KMT, but the standout change came from on-farm inventories, which skyrocketed by 1,363% to reach 395 KMT.

Chickpeas - Finally, chickpea stocks also more than doubled, with total reserves reaching 62 KMT, up 106.7% year-over-year. Commercial holdings increased by 23.8% to 26 KMT, while on-farm stocks rose by 300% to 36 KMT.
