The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the third advance estimates of food grain production on May 28, 2025. According to these figures, chickpea production is projected to be 11.337 million metric tonnes (MMT), representing a decline of 198 thousand metric tonnes (KMT) compared to the second advance estimates published on March 10, 2025.
At AgPulse Analytica, we had anticipated this production figure to be 11.345 MMT in our Global Pulse Monthly S&D Report, which was released in February 2025. We continue to maintain our forecast for Indian chickpea production at this level.
An overview of the anticipated chickpea output for major Indian states in the marketing year (MY) 2025-26 reveals that Maharashtra is projected to lead production with approximately 3.06 million metric tons (MMT). This is followed by Madhya Pradesh, expected to produce around 2.46 MMT, Rajasthan with an estimated 1.97 MMT, and Gujarat, which is forecasted to contribute about 1.48 MMT.
