Official Customs Data Show India’s Highest-Ever Tur and Urad Imports Through January 2026

India’s Department of Commerce released official customs import data for January 2026 showing historically high pulse imports. From April 2025 to January 2026, India recorded its highest-ever import volumes of pigeon pea (tur) and black matpe (urad).

Pigeon pea imports totalled 1.354 million metric tonnes (MMT) during this period, compared with 1.172 MMT in the same period of the previous marketing year and exceeding the previous full marketing year by 11%. Mozambique was the largest supplier, increasing exports by 58% over the previous full marketing year, followed by Myanmar (24% increase) and Tanzania (2% increase).

Black matpe imports reached 905 thousand metric tonnes (KMT) between April 2025 and January 2026, up from 668 KMT in the same period of the previous marketing year and 10% higher than the previous full marketing year. Myanmar remained the leading exporter with 667 KMT supplied, while Brazil recorded the largest growth, with exports rising by 161% compared to the previous full marketing year.
