Tanzania’s Pigeon Pea Exports Dip in 2025, Still Second Highest on Record

Tanzania’s total pulse exports reached 133 thousand metric tons (KMT) in October 2025. Cumulative shipments from January to October stood at 522 KMT, marginally lower than the 533 KMT exported during the same period last year. India remained the largest destination, importing 414 KMT, followed by Kenya with 37 KMT and the UAE with 28 KMT. Of the total pulse exports, pigeon peas accounted for 49%, while chickpeas contributed 32%.

Pigeon pea (Tur/Arhar) exports from Tanzania totalled 258 KMT during January to October 2025, marking a 19% year-on-year decline. Despite the drop, this volume represents the second-highest level of pigeon pea exports on record. India dominated as the primary buyer, absorbing 99.27% of total Tanzanian pigeon pea shipments.

Pulse production in Tanzania continues to expand rapidly, supported by strong and consistent demand from established markets in the Indian subcontinent.
