Canada Reports Record March 31 Stocks for Peas, Lentils, and Chickpeas

Stocks of most Canadian grains, pulses, and oilseeds were significantly higher year-on-year ahead of the 2026-27 crop season, with soybeans being the only major crop showing comparatively tighter supplies as of March 31, 2026, according to Statistics Canada’s principal field crop stocks report released on May 6.

Canadian pulse inventories recorded substantial increases from the previous year, with lentils, peas, and chickpeas reaching record-high March 31 stock levels.

Statistics Canada reported total on-farm and commercial pea stocks at 2.505 million tonnes at the end of March, an increase of 84.7% from a year earlier. The figure also surpassed the previous record of 2.259 million tonnes set in 2018.

Lentil stocks were estimated at 2.376 million tonnes, more than double the year-ago level and well above the previous March 31 record of 1.697 million tonnes established in 2019.

Chickpea inventories stood at 370,000 tonnes at the end of March, also more than twice the level recorded a year earlier and marginally above the previous record high of 367,000 tonnes set in 2021.
