Canada 2025/26 Crop Outlook: Early Estimates Indicate Growth in Pulses and Oilseeds Production

On August 28, 2025, StatCan published model-based initial estimates for Canadian crop production for the 2025/26 marketing year (MY). The forecast indicates that Canadian farmers are expected to produce more Dry Peas, Lentils, Chickpeas, and Canola, while wheat production is projected to decline slightly compared to MY 2024/25.

Crop outlook details:

Wheat: Estimated at 35.55 million metric tonnes (MMT), a slight decrease of about 1% from last year. The harvested area is expected to stay nearly flat, increasing by 0.06% to 10.66 million hectares (Mha).

Canola: Forecasted to rise by 3.63% to 19.94 MMT, primarily driven by higher yields. The harvested area is projected at 8.67 Mha, down slightly from 8.85 Mha the previous year.

Dry Peas: Expected to increase by 13.71% to 3.41 MMT, mainly due to an expansion in harvested area. The forecasted harvested area is 1.38 Mha, up from 1.28 Mha last year.

Lentils: Projected at 2.66 MMT, marking the third-largest harvest on record. The increase is attributed to a larger harvested area of 1.75 Mha, compared to 1.69 Mha in the prior year.

Chickpeas: Estimated at 309 thousand metric tonnes (KMT), ranking as the fourth-largest harvest on record. The rise in production is linked to a 10.15% increase in harvested area, totalling 213.8 thousand hectares.

Please note these are early estimates; final figures will be adjusted based on surveys. The next report will be issued in September 2025, with the definitive data released in December 2025.
