Canada's pulse exports recorded a remarkable recovery during the 2025/26 marketing year, with shipments reaching 5.09 million metric tonnes (MMT) during the first ten months (August–May). Export volumes have already surpassed the full-year totals achieved in both 2023/24 and 2024/25, reflecting a strong rebound in global demand for Canadian pulses.
Strong Recovery After a Cautious Start
The 2025/26 marketing year opened on a relatively slow note. Pulse exports totalled just 162 thousand metric tonnes (KMT) in August, significantly below typical seasonal levels. Shipments recovered sharply in September, rising to 787 KMT, although they remained slightly below the exceptionally strong pace recorded in the same month last year.
During the middle of the marketing year, export activity stabilized. Monthly shipments ranged between 416 KMT and 437 KMT from November through February, indicating consistent demand but not yet pointing to an outstanding export season.
Momentum accelerated considerably in the second half of the year. Exports climbed to 660 KMT in March and 657 KMT in April, marking the strongest monthly performances of the season and driving overall shipments well above recent annual levels.
Strong International Demand Drives Growth
The recovery has been fuelled by robust demand from key importing countries, including India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey, and several Middle Eastern markets. India's continued import requirements, supportive trade policies for yellow peas, and steady buying across Asia have provided a solid foundation for Canadian exports. Despite growing competition from Russia, Canada has maintained its competitiveness through reliable supplies and strong customer demand.
Outlook
The 2025/26 marketing year represents a significant turnaround for Canada's pulse export sector. Strong shipments during the latter half of the season have reinforced Canada's position as one of the world's leading pulse exporters and demonstrated the resilience of international demand for Canadian peas, lentils, chickpeas, and other pulse crops.
