Dynamic Changes: In the Chinese Peas Market

The General Administration of Customs of China has released data for January-February 2025. During this period, China imported a total of 223 thousand metric tonnes of peas, with Canada being the largest supplier, accounting for 44% of the imports, followed closely by Russia at 37%.

In 2023, China’s total pea imports reached 2.66 million metric tonnes, with Canada dominating the market by supplying 59%, while Russia held a 34% share. However, in 2024, Russia overtook Canada as the leading exporter of peas to China, capturing 47% of the market. That year, China’s total pea imports stood at 1.39 million metric tonnes, with Canada ranking second, supplying at 43%.

The Chinese government's 100% tariff on Canadian agricultural products, including peas, has significantly impacted the global market. As of March 20, 2025, the day the tariff took effect, pea prices in Russia have increased, while in Canada, they have declined.

However, regarding significant changes in the Chinese pea market after March 2025, there isn't enough information available yet. The tariff's effects on China's pea market, such as changes in demand, supply, or prices, are still unfolding.
