Russia has rapidly emerged as one of the world's leading pea producers, driven by expanding acreage, improving productivity, and strong export demand. Over the past few years, pea cultivation has become increasingly attractive to Russian farmers as rising demand from key importing countries—including China, India, Turkey, and Pakistan—has significantly improved profitability. China's decision to open its market to Russian peas in late 2022 further accelerated investment in the sector, strengthening Russia's position as a major competitor to Canada in the global pea trade.
In MY 2021/22, Russia harvested 3.17 million metric tonnes (MMT) of peas from approximately 1.43 million hectares, representing a 9% increase in planted area compared with the previous year. Favourable market conditions and growing export opportunities encouraged farmers to continue expanding pea cultivation.
Production continued to increase in MY 2022/23 as acreage expanded further. The upward trend culminated in MY 2023/24, when output reached approximately 4.7 MMT. The substantial production growth was supported by higher planted area and a sharp rise in exports following China's approval of Russian pea imports. During 2023, Russian pea exports approached 2.9 MMT, making the country one of the world's largest pea exporters.
In MY 2024/25, pea production declined due to less favourable weather conditions and lower yields. However, the area planted to peas reached a record high, reflecting continued farmer confidence in the crop and strong long-term export prospects despite the temporary production setback.
The recovery was remarkable in MY 2025/26, when Russia recorded its highest-ever pea production. Output surged by nearly 50% compared with MY 2024/25, primarily due to exceptional yields. Although the area declined slightly—by around 2% from the previous marketing year—the significant improvement in productivity more than offset the reduction in acreage, resulting in a record crop.
Overall, Russia has transformed its pea industry through sustained acreage expansion, yield improvements, and an export-oriented production strategy. With continued access to key export markets and investment in processing capacity, peas are expected to remain one of Russia's most important pulse crops and a major contributor to global pulse trade.
