China imposes a 75.8% temporary anti-dumping duty on Canadian Canola imports

A temporary 75.8% anti-dumping duty on Canadian canola imports has been announced by China, intensifying the two countries' year-long trade dispute. It is anticipated that the measure, which goes into effect on Thursday, will successfully stop the import of Canadian canola seeds.

This comes after China practically halted imports of processed canola products in March 2025 when it decided to impose a 100% duty on Canadian canola oil and canola meal. The limitations on Canada-China canola trade have increased dramatically since the new tariff was expanded to include raw seeds.

In 2024, China brought in 6.39 million metric tonnes (mmt) of canola, which is more than the 5.49 mmt it brought in in 2023. Canada sent 6.13 mmt of this, which was 96% of China's total canola imports. This shows how important Canada is in the market. China imported 1.90 million metric tonnes of canola in the first half of 2025. Canada still sent 94% of the total.

It will be hard to find a replacement for the Canadian supply in the short term. Australia, the second-largest exporter of canola, could help fill the gap, but it doesn't have enough stocks to do so. Because of this, the new duty will probably cause a lot of problems for China's domestic canola supply chain.
