Part 2: Australia Rising Influence in the Global Lentil Market

Australia is emerging as a major force in the global lentil market, supported by expanding acreage, improving yields and strong export demand. Lentils are primarily grown in South Australia and Victoria, which together account for a significant share of the country’s production.

Australian lentil production reached a record level in the 2025/26 crop year, driven by strong growth in planted area and improved yields. The increase in output has significantly expanded export availability, strengthening Australia’s position as a key supplier to major international markets. India remains the most important destination for Australian lentils, while Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates are also important buyers.

Export momentum has remained particularly strong during the current marketing year. Between October 2025 and June 2026, Australia’s lentil exports were approximately 49% higher than during the same period of the previous marketing year and 25% above the total volume exported during the previous full marketing year. India accounted for nearly 42% of shipments during this period, highlighting its importance to Australian exporters.

Australia’s expanding supply, however, is intensifying competition with Canada, the world’s leading lentil exporter. Rising Australian production gives importers greater sourcing options and could increase competitive pressure on Canadian suppliers, particularly in Asian markets.

India’s import policy will remain a critical factor for Australia’s export prospects. The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement has strengthened bilateral trade ties, potentially supporting greater market access for Australian agricultural products.

With record production, rising exports and strong access to Asian markets, Australia is well positioned to challenge Canada’s dominance in the global lentil trade. However, price competitiveness, crop quality, freight costs, currency movements and changes in Indian import policies will remain key factors shaping Australia’s future market share.
