Canada remains the world’s leading producer and exporter of lentils, supported by large-scale cultivation in the Prairie provinces, particularly Saskatchewan and Alberta. Lentils are an important component of Canada’s pulse sector and play a major role in the country’s agricultural export earnings.
Canadian lentil production has expanded significantly over the past decade, although output varies with weather conditions, acreage, and yields. For the 2025/26 crop year, Canada estimated lentil production at around 36% up from the previous crop year. Canada continues to hold a dominant position in global lentil trade.
Exports are a key outlet for Canadian lentils, with major markets including India, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, and other South Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Demand from India is particularly important because of its large population and substantial pulse consumption.
Canada faces increasing competition from emerging producers and exporters. Australia is one of its strongest competitors, with rising lentil production and exports, particularly to India and other South Asian markets. Russia and Kazakhstan are also expanding their pulse industries and strengthening their presence in international markets.
With strong infrastructure, established international trade relationships and large production capacity, Canada is likely to remain a leading force in the global lentil market. However, competition from Australia, Russia and Kazakhstan could increase pressure on Canadian export market share in the coming years.
