Mexico continues to play a key role in the global Kabuli chickpea (garbanzo bean) market, both as a major producer and exporter. The country’s Kabuli chickpea production is concentrated primarily in the states of Sinaloa and Sonora, with planting occurring between October and December, followed by harvesting from March to April.
In the 2024/25 marketing year (MY), Mexico significantly boosted its Kabuli chickpea exports. Between April and December 2024, export volumes rose by 107% compared to the same period in the previous marketing year, and by 73% compared to the total exports for the entire 2023/24 MY.
During this period, Turkey emerged as the top destination for Mexican Kabuli chickpeas, accounting for 52% of total exports. The European Union (EU-27) followed, representing 21% of the export market.
