Brazil’s Black Matpe/Mung Exports Surge to Record High in 2025, Driven by Strong Indian Demand

Brazil’s exports of mung/black matpe (urad), classified under HS Code 071331, have shown a consistent upward trend, according to Brazilian customs data. The calendar year 2025 stands out as a landmark year for the sector, with exports reaching an all-time high—marking a notable achievement for Brazil’s agricultural trade.

Between January and December 2025, Brazil exported a total of 273 KMT of black matpe. This represents a sharp increase compared to 93 KMT exported during the same period in the previous year. The data clearly indicates steady growth in shipments throughout 2025, reflecting rising global demand and improved export momentum.

In terms of destinations, India emerged as the largest importer, accounting for 230 KMT of Brazil’s total black matpe exports during the year. Viet Nam ranked second with imports of 10 KMT, followed by Pakistan in third place with 9 KMT.

Looking ahead, the key question is whether Brazil can establish itself as a reliable origin for black matpe?

Given the strong and sustained demand from India, Brazilian farmers are likely to remain well incentivised, supporting continued production and export growth in the coming years.
