Russia was emerging as an increasingly important player in the global lentil market, supported by rising production, expanding export capacity, and competitive pricing. Although Russian output remained below that of Canada and Australia, its proximity to major importing markets provided a significant logistical advantage.
Russian lentil production had expanded in recent years as farmers increased pulse acreage and improved yields. In the 2025/26 crop year, lentil production reached a record level, rising nearly 55% from the previous year. The sharp increase strengthened Russia’s position as an international supplier and boosted its export potential.

Turkey had emerged as one of Russia’s key lentil export destinations. Russian lentil exports to Turkey were approximately 100 KMT in 2024/25, down from the previous year. However, shipments increased sharply in 2025/26, reaching around 230 KMT, highlighting the growing importance of the Turkish market for Russian suppliers.

Competition in the global lentil market was intensifying as major suppliers expanded production and targeted key importing markets. Canada remained the leading exporter, while Australia was rapidly increasing its production and export availability. Russia and Kazakhstan were also gaining market share, particularly in Turkey and other nearby markets.
