AAFC (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) has recently released a report on Canadian crop years 2022/23 and 2023/24. The estimated area seeded for Canadian field crops in 2023/24 is expected to be slightly higher than in 2022/23. However, the area seeded for pulses and special crops is forecasted to decrease by 1.81% in 2023/24 compared to the previous year. The projected area coverage for pulses and special crops in 2023/24 is 3.64 million hectares, which is slightly lower than the 3.71 million hectares in 2022/23.
Peas: The expected seeded area for the 2023/24 peas crop is marginally lower than the 2022/23 crop year. The projected area coverage for 2023/24 is 1.3 million hectares, compared to 1.36 million hectares in 2022/23. The estimated production is expected to decline by 4.6% to 3.25 million tons from 2022/23.
Lentils: The projected area seeded for the 2023/24 crop year is 1.73 million hectares, which is slightly lower than the 1.75 million hectares in 2022/23. The expected production for 2023/24 is 2.65 million tons, which is higher than the 2.30 million tons in 2022/23. The yield for the 2023/24 lentil crop is estimated to be 1.55 t/ha.
Chickpeas: The area coverage for the 2023/24 crop year is expected to increase from 2022/23. The projected production for 2023/24 is 170 thousand tons, which is higher than the 128 thousand tons in 2022/23.
