Centre extend time period for stock limits of Tur (Pigeon Peas) and Urad (Black Matpe) to 31st December 2023

The Indian government has decided to extend the existing stock limits for Tur (Pigeon Peas) and Urad (Black Matpe) from October 30, 2023, to December 31, 2023. Furthermore, the government has undertaken a comprehensive review of the stock-holding restrictions applicable to various entities within the supply chain, including wholesalers, retailers, millers, and importers.

In accordance with the official notification, substantial adjustments have been made to these limits. Notably, the maximum permissible stock quantity for wholesalers and major retail chains stored at depots has been significantly reduced, from 200 metric tons to just 50 metric tons. For millers, the revised limit now corresponds to the last month's production or 10 percent of their annual capacity, whichever is greater, as opposed to the previous standard of the last three months' production or 25 percent of annual capacity, whichever was higher. Importers are now prohibited from retaining imported stock beyond 30 days following the date of Customs clearance. Additionally, retailers are subject to a stock limit of 5 metric tons.

These revisions to the stock limits, combined with the extension of the time frame, serve as critical measures aimed at preventing hoarding practices and encouraging a consistent and ample release of Tur and Urad into the market. Ultimately, the objective is to ensure the availability of Tur dal and Urad dal at affordable prices for consumers.
