Based on the official data, the European Union's 27 member states experienced a surge in pea imports during September 2023. Specifically, the EU-27 brought in a record-breaking volume of 163 thousand metric tons (KMT) of peas from non-member countries during that month. Consequently, the total pea imports for the EU-27 from July to September 2023-24 amounted to 343 KMT, marking a significant increase from the 127 KMT recorded during the same period in the previous year, 2022-23.
In September 2023, Russia emerged as the primary exporter, contributing 145 KMT, while Ukraine held the position of the second-largest shipper with 15 KMT.
There is a notable trend indicating a rise in pea imports from non-EU-27 countries, attributed to an increase in domestic consumption, particularly in Spain.
