China’s Peas Imports Hit Two-Year High in April 2026 as Canadian Pea Shipments Surge

China Customs released its April 2026 pulse trade data, showing that the country imported approximately 375 thousand metric tonnes (KMT) of pulses during the month. This marks the highest monthly pulse import volume recorded since the beginning of 2024, reflecting a strong recovery in Chinese pulse demand and increased overseas purchases.

Peas dominated China’s pulse imports in April, accounting for nearly 75% of the total volume imported during the month. April also registered the highest monthly pea import figure since early 2024. The sharp increase was mainly driven by China’s decision to reduce import duties on Canadian-origin peas, which significantly improved the competitiveness of Canadian supplies in the Chinese market. As a result, cumulative pea imports during the first four months of 2026 were around 22% higher compared to the same period last year.

Russia continued to maintain its position as China’s leading pea supplier in April 2026, contributing nearly 55% of the monthly imported pea volume. On a cumulative basis, Russia also remained the dominant supplier during January–April 2026, holding approximately 67% share of China’s total pea imports.

Meanwhile, market participants are expecting even stronger import numbers in the coming months. Current Canadian vessel lineups indicate a larger volume of peas scheduled for shipment to China. Since trade relations between China and Canada have gradually normalized, Chinese buyers have become more active in securing Canadian cargoes. The improvement in bilateral trade ties, combined with lower import tariffs and competitive Canadian pricing, is expected to further boost China’s pulse imports through the remainder of 2026.
