On March 27, 2025, the European Commission released its initial projected acreage numbers for the 2025/26 marketing year (MY) field peas crop. According to the projections, the total EU-27 field peas crop acreage is expected to reach 845 thousand hectares (Kha), representing a 14% decline from the previous MY 2024/25.
A breakdown of the projected acreage numbers for key EU member states reveals a mixed picture. France is expected to see a significant increase in field peas acreage, with a 30% rise to 160 Kha. In contrast, other major producers are projected to experience cuts in their field pea acreage. Specifically, the commission estimates that Spain will plant 145 Kha, Germany will plant 108 Kha, Lithuania will plant 68 Kha, and Romania will plant 88 Kha.
However, these projections differ from those made by AgPulse, which estimate that the EU-27 bloc will plant a total of 1.04 million hectares of field peas in MY 2025/26. This more optimistic forecast is likely driven by several factors, including the imposition of import duties on Russian peas, growing domestic demand, and promising export prospects to countries such as China. As a result, EU-27 farmers may be incentivized to plant more field peas, potentially leading to a larger crop than initially projected by the European Commission.
