Tanzania achieved a record level of pulse exports in calendar year 2025, reaching 636 thousand metric tonnes (KMT), a 12% increase compared to 2024. This marks the highest pulse export volume in the country’s history. India remained the leading destination, accounting for 81% of total exports, followed by Kenya at 7% and the UAE at 5%. Among the exported pulses, pigeon peas (tur/arhar) made up 53%, while chickpeas contributed 31%.
Exports of pigeon peas totalled 336 KMT between January and December 2025, reflecting a marginal 1% decline from 2024. Despite this slight drop, it represents the second-highest export volume on record. India continued to dominate as the primary buyer, absorbing 99.42% of Tanzania’s pigeon pea shipments. Farmers are also increasingly favouring the cultivation of tur, driven largely by strong demand from the Indian market.
Pulse production in Tanzania is expanding steadily, supported by robust and consistent demand from key markets across the Indian subcontinent.
